The Debt Limit: A Canadian Perspective

Popular Youtube political analyst, CGPGrey often takes upon himself to comment and inform the internet public on current US Policy, the electoral college, and debunking age old myths. This time he has released a non-partisan video that entails the details of the immense debt limit that looms over the United States of America. He goes into some of the misconceptions that the public has over this issue, one of which is that the President is the one that is solely to blame for this catastrophe. Grey also goes into detail about what a budget is and what changes congress can make it (i.e. any changes). The video then switches from a macro perspective to a micro perspective looking at troubles that face a road worker with this issue. Lastly CGPGrey explains why this debate goes on and on and explains the importance this has to countries outside the U.S. borders.

I like the way that CGPGrey presents the video in a non-partisan matter, as it allows you to make your own independent opinion at the end of the video. As I am a Canadian you might guess that this issue in the United states has no effect whatsoever on me, but as CGPGrey outlined in the video this is completely false. Foreign policy is a thing that exists: "... and since large parts of the  global economy depend on the dollar being trustworthy, messing with that trust is a big deal!" This entails that because Canada does a lot of trading with the United States (e.g. the oil sands of Alberta), and this means that Canada relies on the fact that the U.S. will be trustworthy when it comes to their end of the deal. If we can't have that we would have to stop trading with the U.S. and lose a large amount of wealth that we could have otherwise gained. With those kinds of consequences it's now very easy to see how the debt ceiling , while not under my country, does have large impact on me and is an issue that i should most definitely keep up to date with.
